Common Interview Questions

The following examples are some of the most common interview questions employers ask interviewees. It’s a good idea to write down AND verbalize answers to these questions prior to the interview. Career History and Goals

  • Tell me about yourself. (Here’s how to answer this question)
  • Why are you leaving your current position?
  • Could you walk me through all the positions on your resume and explain why you left each?
  • What are your short and long-term career goals?
  • What is the ideal job for you?
  • If you could start your career again, what would you do differently?

 

Skills and Strengths

  • Why should we hire you?
  • What do you excel at, and what do you need to improve upon?
  • What were your most notable accomplishments in your last position?
  • How would you rate yourself as a professional?

 

Motivation and Work Style

  • What motivates you?
  • How would you describe your personality?
  • How do you handle criticism?
  • Give an example of how you work under pressure/handle stress.

 

Management and Leadership

  • What is your management style?
  • What management style do you work best under?
  • How do you evaluate your staff?
  • Have you ever had to fire an employee? How did you handle the situation?

 

Past Experiences

  • What have you liked and disliked about your previous jobs? (stay positive)
  • What qualities have you liked and disliked about past managers? (stay positive)
  • What is the greatest challenge you have faced in your professional life?
  • What mistakes have you made in your career? How did you fix them?

 

Company Fit

  • Why are you interviewing for a position with this company?
  • Why do you think you will be successful in this company?
  • How long would it take you to make an impact in this company?

 

Interpersonal Skills

  • What would your leader, peer, or staff say about you?
  • Give an example of a manager you have great respect for and why.
  • Give an example of a manager you don’t have great respect for and why. (be careful!)
  • Give an example of a situation where you were upset at work and what you did to improve the situation.
