STAR Interview Technique

The STAR interview technique can be used for many different questions in an interview. All the way from competency-based questions to behavior-based questions. STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action, Result.

  • Situation – Set the scene by describing the situation and giving the details
  • Task – Describe your responsibility in the situation
  • Action – Explain in detail the steps you took to address the situation
  • Result – Share the POSITIVE outcomes your actions achieved

By using the four components of the STAR interview technique (Situation, Task, Action, and Result) it is much easier to give a focused answer that is both compelling and easy for the interviewer to understand. Remember it is important to practice the start technique prior to your interview. Some common questions that you could practice with include the following:

  • Describe a time when you had to deliver bad news
  • Tell me about a time when you were under a tight deadline
  • Tell me about a time when you disagreed with your boss
  • Tell me about a time when you make a mistake
  • Explain a situation where you felt like you were in over your head
